Did you know that in 2015, Ford employees submitted a record-breaking 6,000 patent applications for consideration?
Ford Motor Company's CEO is pushing for "Silicon Valley-style" innovation amongst his ranks, to make Ford not only a maker of great cars, but amazing technology.
To that end, Ford has been working with The Biomimicry Institute for inspiration. Imitating solutions found in nature often yields creative, and environmentally sustainable inventions.
For instance, the gecko, a little desert-dwelling lizard, has foot pads made of a special material which allows them to bond strongly to any surface, even a frictionless surface. They do this through a little-known physical force called van der Waal's forces.
Ford will be working with the Biomimicry Institute to develop cabin materials that exploit van der Waal's forces using the same mechanism as a gecko. It could significantly improve Ford's ability to recycle vehicle parts, among other possible applications.
